Dr Vijayalakshmi Ramshankar is working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Preventive Oncology, heading the research division. She is a doctorate in molecular oncology and completed her post doctoral tenures at prestigious Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Columbia University, Newyork, United States. She is currently a faculty scientist of the reputed Cancer Institute (WIA) and has a vast experience of the more than 25 years in the field on molecular oncology. Her primary focus is on tobacco related cancers like Oral, lung cancers and Human papilloma virus (HPV) based screening for cervical cancer. Her objective is to translate oncology research to patient bedside in the form of prognostic and predictive biomarkers that can be useful for screening, early detection and disease monitoring.
Dr Vijayalakshmi also uses her skill and expertise for molecular diagnostics. Her laboratory expertise is helpful for cancer patients in the various molecular tests such as HLA typing for bone marrow transplants, EGFR and other mutation testing for lung cancers, infectious diseases testing like CMV, HBV, HCV etc.
She has been the recipient of the prestigious lady tata memorial fellowship for doctoral studies, Dept of Biotechnology fellowship for postdoctoral studies, recipient of gold medal for best research in Oral cancer from FHNO (Foundation of Head and Neck Oncology). With more than 50 papers in international and national journals and 4 book chapters, Dr Vijayalakshmi additionally guides Ph.D students and helps in building the skill set for the young postgraduates in her laboratory. Dr Vijayalakshmi is in scientific advisory panels of several reputed academic institutions including IIT Madras, Sri Ramachandra Deemed University, Tamilnadu Dr MGR Medical University and Vellore Institute of Technology.
